Camp Claddagh...
Camp Claddagh is a 100% Voluntary group in Galway that bring children who continue to suffer as a result of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. The group is an outreach group of the Chernobyl Children's International and are currently involved with a number of aid programmes.
The main focus is on bringing children to Galway for a much needed break. Doctors have proven a month here with clean air and diet can add up to two years life expectancy to a child. Camp Claddagh are also building a 'home of hope' in Belarus that will take 10 children from an orphanage and place them in a family home. We also pay for children to have life saving cardiac surgery. Most of all it is all about the children! Everything we do is to enhance the lives of children who live with the aftermath of Chernobyl.
Community and Hospice Care.
At the end of every Rest and Recuperation trip, Camp Claddagh will donate any excess funds to other CCI projects. We have been delighted to be able support a variety of work under the Community and Hospice Care Project which CCI run in Belarus and The Ukraine.
Dasha, is a pre-school child who has required eye surgeries in order bring her vision to an acceptable standard. Surgery was available in St Petersburg for Dasha. The expense of the surgery coupled with the difficult personal circumstances that the parents of Dasha live in, made the option of surgery very remote for this little child. Camp Claddagh were able to provide funds to support the family and we were delighted to hear recently that eye surgery has been successful and Dasha's future is looking far brighter.
Igor is a lively 9 year old little boy, living in an institution in Belarus, who through physical deformity, gets about using elbows and knees! He now has a wonderful 'made to measure' wheelchair, funded by Camp Claddagh which has opened up a whole new world to him. We also funded a trip to Ireland for him and his house parent and were delighted to see him, initially crawling around the floor and then to meet him again speeding around Shannon airport in his custom made wheelchair!
